  Passenger vehicles (R.I.P. Travelall) were just a &#160;small operation of &lt;br /&gt; International Harvester. &#160;The company&#039;s main businesses were medium- &lt;br /&gt; and heavy-duty trucks and Farmall tractors and combines and whatnot. &lt;br /&gt; Sometime in the early 80s -- during the course of business upheaval &lt;br /&gt; that, among other things, caused them to change their name to &lt;br /&gt; Navistar International -- they decided to quit being a small player &lt;br /&gt; among several behemoth competitors in pickups and 4WDs and concentrate &#160; &lt;br /&gt; on markets where *they* were the 600-pound gorilla. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;p&gt;I&#039;m not sure how successful this was. For most of my life, a red &lt;br /&gt; Farmall tractor and a cabover 4070 &#160;and a Loadstar medium-duty &lt;br /&gt; truck or school bus were the usual things I saw in their respective &lt;br /&gt; fields. But now (admittedly after several years in California, which &lt;br /&gt; may confound the results) I see mostly Petes and Kenworths pulling &lt;br /&gt; the big loads, offshore makes of delivery trucks, and... well, being &lt;br /&gt; in the Bay Area, no farm equipment at all. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;--Joe, who has many vivid memories of the tail-happy first-generation Scout &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt; convential that lost air pressure 6 city blocks down 440 (witch is now 195) in
&lt;br /&gt; killeen I knew I had to have one.
&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I bought a 79 scout 16 months ago. I have used it to unstick two hummers and I
&lt;br /&gt; have out pulled anything else around this area.
&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As for that IHC engine missing one head making it a 4 banger look at the horse
&lt;br /&gt; power and tourqe for that motor.
&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As for the top speed change your gears in the axles mine is running 3.07s and i
&lt;br /&gt; can run 110 down the road if I want. Alot of the scout with 4 cylr had real low

  When production of the Scout, and International&#039;s line of light trucks, &lt;br /&gt; cesed in 1980, the Scout owned an 11% share of the entire 4x4 market. &lt;br /&gt; Considering that the unit was only produced for a part of the year, &lt;br /&gt; that&#039;s a pretty good record. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;p&gt;Just prior to the demise of the Scout, IH had unveiled a Kevlar-bodied &lt;br /&gt; prototype, indicating that they were not only innovative and &lt;br /&gt; forward-thinking, but that they intended to stay in the market. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Scout went out of production, not because of its lack of popularity, but &lt;br /&gt; because IH was having financial problems and because of internal &lt;br /&gt; politics. At some point IH decided to drop its line of light trucks, &lt;br /&gt; which included the Scout. Just prior to the IH decision to drop the &lt;br /&gt; Scout, plans were afoot to actually expand the line. One especially &lt;br /&gt; interesting item in the Scout III lineup was the &quot;Sports Enthusiast&quot; &lt;br /&gt; model. This was a lightweight Scout, weighing in at about 2,800-lbs, and &lt;br /&gt; was designed primarily as an off-road vehicle.
