Has anyone had any experience running one of the aftermarket,
oversized (I.E. 22-24 gal.) gas tanks on a CJ-5 ??
My 1980 CJ has developed a gas-tank leak and I was considering replacing
it with one of the larger ones that are availble. I am concerned
about the clearence though, as all the tanks I’ve seen appear to hang
5-6 inches lower than stock.
I would appreciate any recomendations, both positive and negative,
that you might have!
Please post replies to the newgroup as my E-mail connection is
questionable at best!
Thanks,
Tim Welden

Just replaced my leaking stock tank on CJ7 with a 15 gallon polyethylene
tank. My other choice was an Aero 26 gallon. I went with the poly tank
because I’m building a rust-resistant Jeep. However, the folks at Aero
were very helpful and their tank is available with a skidplate welded to
the bottom. The cost is steep but the tank is much stronger than stock and
the price works out about the same per gallon as a stock replacement.
The folks at 4Wheeler magazine have installed a couple of Aero tanks and
have nothing but excellent things to say about them. I read an article
which told of installing one on a Cherokee and driving it cross country on
nothing but off-road trails. At the end of the article the author praised
the tank for absorping the numerous bumps and scrapes along the way with
no damage.
