Merry Christmas…
I’ve got a 97′ Blazer S-10, auto-tran, with 75K on it. I was doing 60 on
the higway, went to accelerate, and got nothing but grinding. Slowed down
and pulled of the highway, and sat there for a bit. Started up again and
the truck wouldn’t shift from 1st to 2nd without me letting off the gas (It
may have been in limp mode, I don’t know). Anyway, I made it home and
checked the fluid. It was full, but has some "flecks" in it. PLUS (as a
bonus) I don’t have Reverse anymore. It doesn’t engage at all, just sits
there.
So to sum up: Heard a loud grinding while accelerating. No Reverse.
Won’t shift to second without letting off the gas. Fluid level is fine and
not dark/dirty but has flecks in it. Other than that it’s fine. (HA!)
I know I have to get it fixed, so my question is this:
Am I looking at a total tranny replacement or is this a valve/pump/linkage
issue???
Any advice would help before I go to the mechanics. (Tomorrow)
Thanks,
Ron Beck

sounds like its dead … i would look for a new trans. the only thing i
can tell you is dont buy a used trans …. go to a few tanny shops try
to find one that has a 12 month or 12000 mile warranty… if you put it
in your self… take it in and have the shope ajust it or linkage for
you … i have bought used trans and they dont last …
you have a broken ‘sun shell’
its purpose is two-fold:
1) stop the rear sun gear in 2nd and 4th
2) drive the rear sun gear in reverse
BTW, when you let off the gas, its shifting 1-3
time for an overhaul, there is an updated part to improve on the original
design

Gary,
You seem to know your transmissions. Can you tell me how to connect a
B&M ShiftPlus? It has a red wire and a black wire and they connect to
the transmission wiring somehow. I got no instructions with mine and
haven’t been able to get in touch with B&M tech support.
Could you possibly tell me what color wires to connect to and where
they might be found? (obviously, they’ll be running to the trans).
It’s part #70380 and is going on a ’95 S-15 Jimmy with 4.3L
Thanks,
-wjc

sorry, I don’t do B&M anything
every unit I get in that has been B&M’d is toasted to a very well-done
state.
my advice on a 4L60E is to leave it alone

Just in case you choose a replacement , rather than repair.
Two years ago, the transmision(at approximately 90,000 miles) in my Aerostar
quit (no forward and no reverse) on New Years Eve outside Baltimore, my
brother-in-law towed the van to his home and we got a rebuilt transmission
from Jasper Engine and Transmissions. He put in the transmission and a fly
wheel at a cost of about $1500.00 and it has run fine since then.
Best wishes, I now have a Blazer also,
Charlie
