FJ40 Odometer Problem

This request for assistance was also posted to "Offr…@ai.gtri.gatech.edu"

Here’s a question for more experienced FJ40 owners, Toyota 4×4 owners in
general, or perhaps anyone experienced with odometers.  Hope it hasn’t
been covered before.

The odometer on my ’81 FJ40 has started hanging up when there are a lot of
"9"s displayed.  I first noticed the problem when it attempted to pass
49,999 miles–it wouldn’t do it for about 10 miles.  Now it hangs up
increasingly.  The tenths column revolves just fine and the speedometer is
working (therefore the speedometer cable is apparently OK).

On the one hand I like having a (permanent) 50,000 mile truck, but really
I’d like to assess the gas milage on a regular basis, so the question is,
how do I fix this problem?  Can these instruments be worked on by the
mechanically inclined or are we talking replacement-city?  Is there some
trick (e.g., a squirt of oil in the right place) that will work?  Is this
a common problem for FJ40s?  I’ve never had a problem with a
speedometer/odometer before.  Thanks for any help you can provide.
