I have a few questions concerning my ’95 Explorer XLT related to the
4WC AUTO setting ( ie. "full-time" 4WD ):
- When to shift between 2WD and 4WD AUTO?
My dealer’s Service dep’t thinks it’s crazy to shifting to/from 4WD AUTO
near highway speeds, but the Owner’s Manual states any speed is fine.
Should I be concerned with transfer case wear if shifting while at a
higher speed?
- When driving in 4WD AUTO, the drivetrain begins humming and the whole
truck vibrates increasingly after 60mph. The Service folks say Ford has
had question about vibration, and they give the "everything is normal"
answer. Does this make any sense?
Hey, my friend’s Jeep Grand Cherokee with QuadraTrac doesn’t become
annoying like this at similar speeds, so why should I accept that the
Ford 4WD AUTO system is so much worse ( until I’m given some factual
reasons
? Do other ’95 Explorer owners notice these symptoms?
- The Service folks ( again ) tell me that the front wheels are getting about
20% of the power when 4WD AUTO is engaged – more when their is
rear slippage. Is this accurate?
This ( again ) flies in the face of what I’ve read in the Owner’s Manual
all reviews of the Explorer – I thought that the front axle only got
power when the rear started to slip. Actually, my second Q: above
seems to be related to the front wheels getting power when they
shouldn’t be ( ie. no slippage, just testing things out ).
Any real or educated guess info would be humbly appreciated – I’m a bit
nervous about this whole 4WD AUTO thing now, and starting to re-think
my purchase decision a bit ( I just couldn’t get comfortable in a Jeep GC,
though perhaps I should have tried harder ).
Sincerely,
